Hola. Que tal?
So sorry for the lack of updates recently. Life here in Spain has been speeding by–so let me catch you up a bit. In my last post I mentioned that I had to switch houses, which turned out to be a good investment. Now, not only do I live closer to the school, but I´m also right next to a large park and pretty close to Kelsey Norris (my other half; see blog link on right). In addition, my new abuelita is very quirky; the first day I moved in, she showed me all of her dresses and made me look through her son´s wedding album… twice. However, I can´t complain; she prepares really good meals and she washes and irons my clothes. I might just bring her home with me!
School is also going really well. I am in class for about four hours a day with teachers who speak only Spanish and with international students with whom I can only communicate with in Spanish, which means I practice speaking a lot. But I am enjoying every bit of it. Next Wednesday I have a FIFTEEN minute presentation due in my afternoon class–ALL IN SPANISH. I´m a little frightened. But as my mom would say,¨When the goin´gets tough, the tough get goin´.” So, I just gotta roll with it.
So all is well here. And I hope it´s the same in your part of the world. But I have to go for now–Spain is about to play their first game of the world cup. More later–
Kelsey
¡Hola del pais magnifico de España!
After many hours of sleepless, turbulent, transatlantic travel, we finally arrived! Es la verdad…We are finally in Spain! Then we took a bus from Madrid to meet our families in La Plaza de Cervantes in Alcala. My host mother is very friendly and has a pooch of the same disposition; and although most surfaces in her apartment are littered with baby Jesus and mother Mary statues and the walls are dominated by large portraits of her late husband in military uniform, it is nice and cozy. Unfortunately, however, I will have to change families due to the inconvenient distance and difficulty of transportation to and from the apartment, but soon I will be settled in with a new family, hopefully much closer to the school and the plaza. In other news, we just finished our placement test at the university and now we are about to go on a tour of the town. So you´ll hear about that in my next post!
Hasta luego
Well here it is! Travel day has finally arrived. We left out of memphis early this morning, saying our good-byes to families and friends, only to fly to…Houston, TX? Here we (los quatro amigos…Kelsey, Drew, Jonathon, and I) ordered the cheapest meals possible (much to our waiter’s distaste) at the overly-priced Pappadeux airport restaurant. Now we await our flight to… New Jersey? Ah, airport hopping. Gotta love it. But eventually… Eventually… We’ll get to Spain! I can’t wait
until then…
Hola y Bienvenidos.
Welcome to my Study Abroad Blog! Only 5 days remain until I will be living with a family in Spain for two months while studying Spanish at the University of Alcala.
On the weekends, my friends and I plan to travel around the country–Barcelona, Mallorca, Granada, and Costa Verde are just a few of the places we would like to go. As we experience the language and culture, I will update this blog to share my experiences and stories.
Consider it my very own version of The Sun Also Rises… with a lot less booze and swearing
